Carrickfergus is reached by taking the motorway around the north of Belfast and then following the lough shore. The motorway does most of the distance, so the run is more predictable than the mileage suggests, but the last stretch is an ordinary A road through built up shore settlements and it is slower than it looks on a map. The more significant constraint in Carrickfergus is at the destination rather than on the journey: the older streets around the castle and the walled town are tight, and access for a long load is worth confirming before a delivery date is agreed. On a stair that matters more than on anything else made here, because a stair is unforgiving of a late change and there is rarely slack in the programme by the time parts are due.

The work itself follows the town. Carrickfergus has a mix of marine and harbour related work, industrial and commercial fit-out, and a substantial domestic market along the shore with a lot of period property in it, so an order arriving from here is more often a repeat production part than a single bespoke piece. Stair and panel work tends to arrive through fit-out contractors and joiners rather than direct, so the local contractor base is what really determines the flow of this work.

Building stock is the other thing worth raising early. Around the castle and the harbour, the walled town and High Street you are mostly looking at the walled town and the streets around the castle, which carry a concentration of listed buildings and conservation designation unusual for a town of this size. Further out there is extensive post-war and modern housing spreading inland and along the shore, plus modern industrial units. Work of this kind out there is normally a straightforward measure and machine job. The castle setting and the walled town bring a level of heritage scrutiny that a modern estate elsewhere in the borough simply does not attract, so historic core work should start with a consent check. For a stair or a panelled interior this is the single most important thing to settle first, because a consent condition can change the design itself and not just the timetable.

None of this changes the price of a cut. MDF, birch plywood, poplar plywood, Valchromat, acrylic, HDPE, PVC and decorative furniture board all come through the same regional suppliers whichever town the parts are going to, so lead time is driven by board availability and machine time rather than by which road the delivery takes. Structural stair components and decorative panels have genuinely different material requirements, so the specification should separate them rather than treat the whole job as one order.
