Strabane

Strabane can be reached two ways from the workshop: west on the A6 over the Glenshane toward Derry and then south on the A5, or across country through Omagh. The A6 route is the faster of the two now that much of it is dual carriageway, but the Glenshane in poor weather can reverse that in a morning. Either way it is a long run and a scheduled one. Strabane sits right on the border, and cross border trade shapes a good deal of what happens there, which occasionally means a job here has a supply chain running in both directions. On cut-to-size panel work that matters more than it sounds, because a kitchen or carcass run is usually the first thing on site and everything else queues behind it.

The work itself follows the town. Strabane has an industrial and construction base with a strong cross border element, alongside joinery and building contractors serving the town and the surrounding rural area, so an order arriving from here is more often a one-off or a short run than a rolling production schedule. Panel cutting is volume-sensitive work, so the size of the local trade base shows up directly in how a cutting list arrives here.

Building stock is the other thing worth raising early. Around the Main Street and Abercorn Square, the Mourne river and the border bridge you are mostly looking at the older commercial frontages around Main Street and Abercorn Square and the surviving nineteenth century buildings near the river. Further out there is extensive post-war and modern housing across the town and modern industrial and retail units on the edges. Work of this kind out there is normally a straightforward measure and machine job. Heritage interest in Strabane is concentrated in a small number of older town centre buildings, so most work here is ordinary building control rather than a conservation question. For cut-to-size work the practical effect is mostly on tolerances: an older building rarely gives you a square opening, so sizes are better taken off the actual reveal than off the drawing.

None of this changes the price of a cut. MDF, birch plywood, poplar plywood, Valchromat, acrylic, HDPE, PVC and decorative furniture board all come through the same regional suppliers whichever town the parts are going to, so lead time is driven by board availability and machine time rather than by which road the delivery takes. Board decor and thickness are the two things worth settling first on a cutting job, because a late change to either means the whole sheet layout is nested again.
